Invited to Explorer's Program but I have an iPhone. Questions.
« on: November 27, 2013, 12:36:35 AM »
Hey everyone this is my first post.  So today I finally got my invitation to participate in the explorers program.  I have been fascinated by Glass since before most people knew about it.  I had a few questions though before I decide to fork over 1500$.

I am still grandfathered in on my data plan with AT&T, will I be able to connect my data to glass via bluetooth?  Or will that only be possible through tethering?  I have read though that the newest update allowed android to bypass tethering on their devices.

If I can't use the data is it even worth it?  Will I be able to open and view apps?

What is your favorite thing about Glass?  I work in the music business and am excited to use it when I go to concerts and am on set.

Sorry for all of the questions.  I have many more but just answering these will help out a lot.

-Paul

My glass hasn't arrived yet but I was in a similar boat and did a lot of research. The basic functionality will work if you upgrade to a tethering plan so that you can share your wifi with your glass (alternatively you can jailbreak it and use mywi if you're not on iOS 6.1.3+ [iirc]). However, you won't be able to use the GPS and some other features.

I didn't want to do this because it would require me leaving my unlimited data plan that I'm currently grandfathered into... Because of this I decided to grab a nexus 5 for my glass... It's a steal for what it is.. just $350 off contract. I'll probably eBay my iPhone 5s to recoup some of the damages!

Hope that helps!

Hi

Glass with Bluetooth will make you be able to receive call but won't provide Internet access. iPhone has a hotspot feature (or tethering on Android) to share your cellular data via wifi. Some of cellular provider may prohibit, it depends on your operator.

Update: I've obviously had the glass awhile now and am using it with my nexus5. Google has finally produced an app for iPhone but from my brief poking at it it's still limited when compared to the android version. For one, you need a tethering plan. Secondly, you can't text. So other than that it just got a lot better... Turn-by-turn directions and ect are all now available for iOS.
